A former assistant police chief in Alabama who beat a prison inmate is currently avoiding his own time in the slammer.
Chris Miles used to work for the Tallassee Police Department, pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights and false statements after whacking the man in the head with a packet of copy paper.
Miles’s repeated hits and other blows with his hand are thought to have led to false confessions from Stephen Conrad, who later pleaded guilty to four counts of child sex abuse, about additional crimes and victims that did not exist.
In November the 41-year-old assistant chief admitted to lying about the incident to the FBI and stealing 16 pounds of marijuana from the evidence locker to sell as a drug dealer.
He and was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison and was scheduled to surrender to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Friday.
Miles pleaded guilty to smacking an inmate with a pack of papers and stealing marijuana from the evidence locker.

However, Miles left authorities waiting for an arrival that never came, according to AL.com.
The U.S. Marshals Service is searching for him, and has issued an arrest warrant for the failure to appear.
Miles, who was called a “maverick” by federal prosecutors, was also charged by Alabama authorities for allegedly stealing a handgun from the Tallassee police evidence locker while working as assistant chief.
